"We started Dunlin Press in 2014 with the aim of publishing emerging writers and visual artists whose work is intelligent, thought-provoking and beautiful, and which for various reasons might prove difficult to place with more established or commercial publishers. We—Ella Johnston and MW Bewick—also see Dunlin Press as an ongoing art project, rather than being simply a small press that hopes to grow into a larger one. Each book is a project that, so far, simply happens to have been produced in book form. Contributors to our titles include the film maker Chris Petit, the poet Wendy Mulford, Hookland author David Southwell, the abstract landscape painter Luke Elwes, and cult songwriter Martin Newell, among many. Place has been an important thread through all our titles, from an exploration of East Anglia to the migrating paths of wading birds, to work focused more on London. We had been living and working in the capital as journalists and artists of sorts for quite a few years before moving to the marshes of northeast of Essex and setting up Dunlin—swapping the pigeons and town birds of the city for the curlews and godwits of the estuary. The tension between the two places is sometimes felt in the work. And the name is important, too—dunlins, those scurrying little wading birds, work the shore for sustenance in groups, communally, operating in the margins. It's a good place to be."
